“Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”  – Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

In this one-day retreat in my cozy home in the quaint Village of Millbrook in the Mid-Hudson Valley, we will create a “sacred pause” from the busyness of our lives to reflect, recharge, and renew ourselves as we invite and listen for the voice of the soul to speak. Our theme for the day is the power of living questions as seeds for discernment into the issues affecting us. Using stories from our own journeys, poems, songs, images, seasonal metaphors, and insights from various wisdom traditions, we will create a safe, hospitable, and courageous space, called a Circle of Trust®. We will learn to ask open, honest questions and take our own questions to heart as we support others in doing the same.

This retreat is based on the work of Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal. The Circle of Trust approach, described in Palmer’s book A Hidden Wholeness, offers touchstones for creating a hospitable and charged “container”, in which to cultivate our inner capacity to live a more authentic, meaningful, and engaged life: to work toward living an undivided life, true to our identity and integrity. Questions live at the center of this approach and learning to ask them and hold them offers a key to our personal, vocational, political, and communal well-being. Acknowledging the human need for both solitude and community, we will take time to reflect in silence, meet in small groups, and rejoin together in the larger group.
