Collaborative, supportive school communities are critical to helping students succeed in learning and life. The Leading Together professional development program for K-12 educators and administrators is built on a simple idea: the quality of adult relationships within a school community has the biggest impact on a school’s ability to improve.
Leading Together is designed to strengthen the relationship between principals and teacher leaders to facilitate trusting relationships among adults in the school community — principals, teachers, staff, and family members — to improve professional capacity, relational trust, and collaboration in better service of student outcomes.
The 2-day workshop will prepare the team to build relational trust in their own adult community by:
– Cultivating self-awareness
– Building relationships
– Fostering teamwork and shared leadership
– Strengthening capacity to listen and be fully present in teaching, leading, and relationships
– Sharpening ability to focus and maintain attention
– Addressing conflict constructively
– Reconnecting with what originally inspired us to become educators
The program is adaptable to the needs identified by the school team implementing the program, and upon completion of the Leading Together workshop, school leadership teams will be connected with a facilitator/coach who can help them implement the program in their schools.

Created by the Center for Courage & Renewal, and drawing on the Circle of Trust® Approach principles and practices first articulated by Parker J. Palmer, in his groundbreaking book, The Courage to Teach, Leading Together does not impose change from without. Leading Together inspires change from within the heart of the school community. Leading Together is grounded in a logic model developed in collaboration with Dr. Sara Rimm-Kaufman and colleagues at the Social Development Laboratory of the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia.
Meet Your Facilitators
Dawn Montgomery’s 32 years in K-12 education supports her service to the professional development of leaders. Her varied work experience include elementary and middle school teacher, middle and high school vice principal, high school principal, and district office director overseeing K-12 schools and many district programs and initiatives. Besides serving as a Courage & Renewal facilitator, she is an executive performance coach, an equity trainer and facilitator and she directs educational leadership licensing programs at Lewis & Clark College.
Sue Brent’s 35 year career as a public school teacher and administrator includes 20 years teaching grades 1-9 as well as contracted special programs in three districts. As a school administrator Sue served15 years in Portland Public Schools. Retired from Wilson and PPS in June 2012, Sue began facilitation training with the Center for Courage & Renewal. Sue is currently working as an administrative substitute and helping to co-facilitate Courage to Lead retreats.
