Program Description

“The power for authentic leadership is found not in external arrangements, but in the human heart.”
– Parker J. Palmer

Because effective leadership is rooted in the identity and integrity of the person, Courage to Lead® is committed to creating open, disciplined spaces – circles of trust – where you can re-discover the deep connection between who you are and what you do.

What it’s like:
COURAGE TO LEAD creates a space in which participants can listen to each other – and to themselves – with encouragement and compassion. In this introductory retreat, up to 24 participants will gather in large group, small group, and solitary settings to explore important questions about leading and serving. Stories from the various wisdom traditions, poetry and art will be used to invite participants into reflection and discussion.

This is a retreat, not a workshop ~ retreat not as an escape but as engagement at a deeper level with our lives and work. Together we will pay attention to the unfolding of our identity and integrity and help each other embrace courageously the responsibilities and roles that fill our lives.

Retreat details:
9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day at Ijams Nature Center. Choose one day or both, as the theme and content for each day will be different. The fee is $150 per person per day, or $250 for both days; fee includes lunch, snacks and all materials. Limited scholarship funds are available; to inquire, contact Marta Murrell.

Wear comfortable clothing in case you want to walk the beautiful trails. Bring a pen and journal, and plan to arrive a few minutes early so you will be fully ready at 9:00 am.

“If we attempt to act and to do things for others and for the world without deepening our own self-understanding, our own freedom, integrity, and capacity to love, we will not have anything to give to others.”
– Thomas Merton

What people say:
“I’m naturally introverted, but in a constantly ‘giving’ role. I regularly need to take time for myself. Courage to Lead gave me the opportunity for personal reflection, and connection with others in a way that was therapeutic for me. Some key insights helped me change the way I react to others at work.”

Kara Finger, VP of Programs

“I found the Courage and Renewal community supportive and hospitable. The Circles of Trust frame exactly what they profess to offer….a sacred space in which to ponder life’s lessons and opportunities. I recommend this Tennessee opportunity to be within a supportive and respectful community to anyone experiencing burn-out or transition, or to anyone looking to make meaningful changes in their lives.”
